Memorial Day is not a “happy” day

The Friday of Memorial Day weekend my wife and I went shopping at a local warehouse store. As a veteran I was shocked and deeply offended to see many employees decked out in red, white, and blue leis and one even wearing red, white, and blue deely-boppers. Memorial Day is not a time for celebration. It is a day for somber remembrance of the many who have given their lives in service to our country. Originally, it was called Decoration Day because it was when people put flowers on the graves of their loved ones lost in battle. I understand that it has become the unofficial start of the summer season, but that ought not be an excuse for such a lack of decorum. “Happy Memorial Day” is insensitive, crass, and offensive. People need to show some respect for our war dead if only on this one day.
